Good or Bad

Both. Just about everywhere you go or look bacteria are present. You will find bacteria in people, animals, food, water, soil, and even in the air.

Bacteria are everywhere. Right now, while you are reading this, there are about a billion bacteria on every tooth in your mouth! So what are bacteria?

Bacteria are very tiny single-celled living things (organisms).

In fact, bacteria are so tiny that scientist must gather a lot of bacteria in groups (called colonies) and use high powered microscopes just to see them.

Bacteria live and reproduce from the nutrients in our bodies and in places like the food we eat.

Bacteria are responsible for making us sick. This usually happens after we eat rotten food caused by bacteria. Rotten food smells and tastes bad. Over time, bacteria grow on foods that are warm and have water (moisture).

Eating food with a lot of bacteria sometimes causes food poisoning and makes us sick. Is it true that all kinds of bacteria are harmful

Absolutely not! Actually, we can't live without bacteria. Some bacteria are good for our bodies. For example, there are bacteria in our intestines that help us digest our food

Some types of bacteria are used to make medicines. Other types can be used to make healthy food like yogurt and blue cheese.
